The Jolly Grant Airport is also known as the Dehradun Airport and serves the main city of Dehradun in the state of Uttarakhand in India. The airport is located near the foothills of the Himalayas and is located near the holy city of Rishikesh which is considered the gateway to the Himalayas.

Current expansion programs are still being instilled with the latest expansion of the runway just being completed in 2008. The runway was expanded to enable aircrafts like the Airbus A320s for landing. Furthermore, this would encourage more airlines to accommodate flights to the region. Currently, the passenger airline providing flights to the region is the Kingfisher Airlines which makes regular trips to Delhi.

A main reason for its expansion is due to the fact that the city of Rishikesh, which is a tourist attraction, is quite accessible from the airport. Rishikesh is a holy city for the Hindus and the gateway to the Himalayas. For the Hindus, Rishikesh is a pilgrimage site as it is said to be the former home of Lord Vishnu. Furthermore, the River Ganga also flows through the valley and is considered a sacred by the people who are part of this religious belief.
