Jordaan
Jordaan is a district in the city of Amsterdam, Holland, in the Dutch province of Noord-Holland, which, in the broadest definition, is bounded by the waters of the Prinsengracht and the Lijnbaansgracht, respectively Brouwersgracht and the canal. Most keep it, however, that the southern border is not the canal but the Passeerdersgracht. The most common theory about the origin of the name of the district was taken from the French word for garden. Indeed, many French Protestant refugees settled in the Jordaan in the 17th century. Most streets in the Jordaan take their names of flowers.
At the end of the 20th century house prices shot up, so many houses were too expensive for the original inhabitants. This forced them to leave Jordan and many former Jordanezen live now in Purmerend and Almere. Also, most traditional businesses have been replaced by houses and shops.
Jordan was its small houses traditionally a typical class area. Through its history, the area is a symbol of tolerance in Amsterdam. A statue of Anne Frank, near his house, and the monument of three triangles, a tribute to homosexual victims of Nazism continues this tradition of tolerance of the city. René Descartes lived in the Jordaan. The Paradiso was used as a stage for many of the struggles and humanist claims. Rembrandt is buried in this church. Noorderkerk, another beautiful church of the seventeenth century along with Madame Tussaud's, Westerkerk, Dam Square, the Royal Palace, Munttoren, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam, Nieuwe de la Mar Theater represent only one little part of the amazing range of architectural and cultural items of Amsterdam, located in this district. Magna Plaza and Kalverstraat are the largest shopping areas in the district. In Jordan, there are several markets on the Westerstraat Lindengracht and Noordermarkt.
