With such a rich history, Charleston is awash in lovingly preserved buildings, many of which house museums dedicated to explaining not just the city's past, but also specific families and prominent figures that helped make the city what it is today. One of the most popular tourist sites is The Joseph Manigault House, a historical house that also serves as a museum.

Declared a National Historic Landmark in the 1970s, the house has been around since the 1970s, though it has quite a history of fighting to exist. In the 1920s, a new gas station was to be built, but a group of locals who felt it was important to preserve the house and its distinctive Adam style architecture, banded together and made sure the building would be spared.

The Charleston Museum owns The Joseph Manigault House and oversees its operations. More than just one of the city's most architecturally important buildings, it is a testament to the industry which brought prosperity to many of Charleston's citizens. Designed by Gabriel Manigualt, a prominent architect, the house was originally built for his brother Joseph, who made a small fortune in growing and trading rice.

The Joseph Manigault House is open to visitors Monday through Saturday, from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon. Tours are offered, which is a much better way to really gain the historical sense of the home. The house is also open on Sunday from one until five in the afternoon.
