Józsefváros
The 8th division of Budapest or Józsefváros, also known as the City of Joseph is one sector located on the eastern bank of the Danube, right next to the center of Budapest (Belváros-Lipótváros, "City-City Center Leopold"). The name of this district comes from Emperor Joseph II.
The history of Budapest and that of Józsefváros are inseparable from each other. The first settlers in the lower suburbs appeared around 1720. The development of the town was interrupted by the floods 1838. Today, there were around 1710 acres of land, divided between the 20 existing farms. The district’s reputation is one of the lowest because of the poverty perpetuated ever since the 40 years of socialism and the nearly one hundred year tradition of prostitution practices.
The Keleti is a nice historic building, but the space in front is not exactly a tourist attraction. And yet there are thousands of things that it is worthwhile to explore. In the vicinity of the National Palace Museum once lived here, many aristocrats, the Esterhazy and the Károlyi Palace, the Wenckheim Palace are beautiful landmarks. The Piarists School, the Faculty of Law, and the University Pázmány Petrus contributed to the establishment of the Hungarian Radio. Budapest city library is one of the busiest in Europe. The daily eight thousand visitors come partly from the universities of the district. There are many students, therefore there are not only many libraries but also several pubs and cafes. The party headquarters of the Socialists and Fidesz are also located in the Josefstadt. The busiest underground railway station is Ferenc körút.
