JSE Limited, which is located in Sandton, Gauteng, South Africa, was previously known as Johannesburg Stock Exchange and as JSE Securities Exchange. It is the largest stock exchange in the continent of Africa and ranks 16th worldwide.

JSE Limited was created to handle the financial companies that were born when gold was discovered in Witwatersrand. Starting in a small building, it soon became too small for trading. Over the years, it became necessary to build one building after another as there was even a time when the trading took place, literally, on the streets.

This stock exchange facility uses a fully-automated electronic trading system. JSE trading hours start from 9 a.m. and end at 5 p.m., and is closed on weekends and public holidays declared in advance. All transactions are guaranteed as long as they are conducted through the trading system’s central order book. Trading is not limited to those on the floor but can actually be accomplished over the internet in a secured site.
