Founded in 1962, The Judah L. Magnes Museum houses both art and manuscripts relating to Jewish history and culture. The museum is named after Judah L. Magnes, the co-founder of The Hebrew University of Jerusalem and well-known activist who was born and raised in Oakland. The museum hosts a few different collections, including one of art and objects used for Jewish rituals, as well as a very extensive rare book and manuscript library. The highlight, however, is The Western Jewish History Center. It is here that that San Francisco's Jewish history is kept alive, with an incredible collection of photographs, papers, and records for 13 states in the USA.

The museum's research facilities are open to the public on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. Hours vary between either ten in the morning until five in the afternoon or ten in the morning until two in the afternoon. The museum also has a program online that's worldwide called Memory Lab, where Jewish people can submit narratives so that history is better kept alive.

Located right near the Clermont Canyon Preserve, a number of Berkeley hotels are close to The Hudah L. Magnes Museum, including The Claremont Resort & Spa, Rose Garden Inn, Hotel Durant, and Beau Sky Hotel.
