Named after Tanzania’s first president, Julius Nyerere International Airport is the country’s premier transport hub. It is the busiest and largest airport with a long history starting from the British colonial period.

It all started with the construction of Mkeje Aerodome, built by the British in 1928. As the aviation industry grew, the aerodome didn’t seem fit to suit the purpose of a full-fledged airport. In 1954, the first terminal opened. When the 1980s came, the next phase of expansion successfully created the Terminal 2, increasing the airport’s capacity to accommodate 1.5 million passengers and 30,000 tons every year.

Located in Dar es Salaam, the Julius Nyerere Airport serves most Africa-based carriers and a few European airlines. The airport is half an hour’s drive from the city center by taxi and car rental. Public buses have regular trips along Nyerere Road. Ample parking space is available free of charge at Terminal One parking area. Pay facilities, on the other hand, can be found next to the Terminal 2 building.
