Jungle Island got its start in 1911, when Austrian Franz Scherr made his way to America, bringing with him a passion for animals and their habitats. It was not until 25 years later, however, when he would make his dream of an attraction where birds could fly free a reality, and created his own Jungle in Miami. He originally rented the land for $25.00 a year, and carved out winding trails among the tropical flora to be the backdrop for his first group of birds—Macaws from Texas. Today, the Jungle is home not only to birds, but to reptiles, mammals, primates, and fish, as well. Visitors can enjoy the numerous animal shows, including Tale of the Tiger and Winged Wonder, and exhibitions. The site also offers wedding and event packages.

Opening hours vary by season, but run from approximately 10 am to 6 pm, Monday through Sunday. Single-day admission prices are $29.95 for adults, $27.95 for seniors, and $23.95 for children aged 3 and up.

Visitors can enjoy lodging at the nearby Holiday Inn Port of Miami or the Blue Moon Hotel.
