Kadikoy

Kadiköy is a district in Istanbul, located on the Asian side of Turkey. It is bordered to the east by the Maltepe district, to the north by Ümraniye, by Üsküdar to the south and by the Marmara Sea to the west. The 1990 census indicated that Kadiköy housed 648 282 people.
Kadiköy occupies the site of ancient Chalcedon, which takes its name. Kadiköy is a vast cosmopolitan and commercial district on the Asian side of Istanbul City in Turkey with a population of 533,452 inhabitants (2008), being the most populated city of Istanbul. Kadiköy is broken down into districts or mahalle (in Turkish). It is the oldest site of the city of Istanbul itself. Archaeological objects were found dating back to 3000 BC C., and stone artifacts, bone, pottery, jewelry and bronze indicate the existence of a human site continuously since prehistoric times.
Currently the center of Kadiköy is a communications hub, a place of business, shopping and crossing point for people traveling from Istanbul's Asian side to the European city and vice versa. The district center itself is a cluster of new buildings and old houses and buildings from past resident Germans, French, Greeks and Armenians who lived in large numbers in this district during the Ottoman period-hence the number of churches and cemeteries of other faiths religious-that give a peculiar feature of this cosmopolitan district which now houses the working class or middle class and many students.
