Kalverstraat

Kalverstraat in Amsterdam is the Netherlands largest shopping center and runs from north to south from the Dam to the Munt Square, partly parallel to the Singel.
From 1486 to 1629 there was also a cattle market in this area and this place was therefore called Ossenmarkt. The street has about 150 stores and pedestrian zone. The street is approximately one kilometer long and has 15 side streets and alleyways. The focus of the offering is fashion: clothing and shoe stores dominate with about 90 branches since the 1990s the street. Since about 1995 a Sunday shopping area attracts many visits. Problems with the shopping and parking are shoplifting .Within 500 m there are only two parking garages, the Beehive and the Stopera. Homes are missing almost completely, because most shop owners do not afford a front space to keep a house door. Most buildings from the 17th and 18th centuries have four or five floors.
Near Kalverstraat there are many (Imperial) monuments: the former Civic Center (now the Historical Museum), the HH Peter and Paul Church (The Parrot) and the Orphanage gate. The houses on the Kalverstraat had previously canal gardens that over the time have disappeared under the buildings. Madame Tussaud's Amsterdam and Artis Zoo,also, Westerkerk, Dam Square, Royal Palace Amsterdam, Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and Anne Frank House are very important landmarks. The most popular areas are: Cafe Mankind, Supper Club Amsterdam and Flower Market .The first public film screening of Auguste and Louis Lumière in the Netherlands (1896) was held in the Kalverstraat. The closest airport is Schiphol and the nearest train stations are: Amsterdam Central Station and Amsterdam Muiderpoort.
