Located about six miles from downtown Anchorage, Alaska Pacific University is small liberal arts college that is known for offering students an active learning environment. Founded in 1957, it was originally known as Alaska Methodist University before changing its name in 1977 to reflect its educational mission, as it does not require religious instruction. In fact, it has a chair in Catholic Theology, endowed by the Catholic Bishop of Anchorage, proof of the ecumenical philosophy of the college.

The student population is 719 students and a large percentage of the students are older than 40.

Alaska Pacific University is part of the Eco League, a US college consortium dedicated to environmental learning. It is renowned for its Nordic Ski team, because at the Thomas Training Center on Eagle Glacier, skiers can train on snow from November to August, longer than anywhere else in the United States. Famous alumni include Katherine Gottlieb, 2004 MacArthur Fellowship recipient and Sharon Cissna, Alaska State Representative (Democrat).

It is located on 177 acres and features forests, bike paths and a lake. Grant Hall is the oldest building on campus used for academics. In nearby Palmer, Alaska, the Kellogg Farm of 700 acres is where students study nature and sustainability.
