Kanut Guild Hall

Hotels near Kanut Guild Hall, Tallinn, Estonia .

Located in the heart of old town Tallinn, a UNESCO World heritage city, the Kanut
Guild Hall traces its founding back to the 13th century when Tallinn was a beginning its
long history as an important port on the trade route between Russia and Scandinavia. It
was during this time that the city of Tallinn became a member of the Hanseatic League, a
trading alliance made up of major trading cities and their associated guilds along the
northern coastline of Europe. This made the guilds an important aspect of merchant life
in Tallinn between the 13th and 17th centuries, though the Kanut Guild saw it's peak of
power during the 1500s.

While the Guild began its life as religious brotherhood, it eventually evolved into a union
of mainly German workers of handicrafts. These included bakers, cobblers, gold and
silversmiths, watchmakers, and painters among others.

Having been built in the 13th century and adapted over the years, the main façade of the
Kanut Guild Hall was constructed in 1863 in the English Tudor style. On this simple
front sit tow statues, one of Martin Luther and the other of St. Kanut, the patron saint of
Denmark. In a odd reminder of the hall's past as a dance hall, directly across from the
guild, perched high on top of a Baroque-style building is the "Peeping Man". Popular
legend states that this figure in old-fashioned spectacles was put there as a reminder to
the ladies dancing in the hall that their husbands were watching them. Today the Kanut
Guild Hall is used as a theater which houses dance classes, art shows and musical and
performance art events. You can find the list of upcoming events at their website:
www.saal.ee .

Accommodations in the scenic old town range from the budget traveler's hostels, to the
historic four-star hotels that rival anything found in Western Europe. Staff at hotels on
both ends of the price spectrum are multi-lingual and can assist travelers with information
around town. Restaurants and cafes abound in the center and offer a variety of local and
international favorites.
