Karl Johans gate is a large, long street in Oslo in Norway. The street runs from Central Station to the Royal Palace in Oslo. The street is named after Charles XIV John of Sweden.
The street consists of two parts with different histories. The eastern part of Station Square to Egertorg lay within the walls of the Danish king Christian IV and was not initially considered as a coherent road. The western part was associated with the castle of the architects HD Linstow, planned as a sightline and Parade Street Avenue. It was built in the 1830s and was given the name Slotsvej in 1840. 1852, at Karl Johan's death, it was named after the late monarch.
On the national holiday of Norway on May 17 there is a large (flags) parade that leads to the Royal Palace where the royal family on the balcony waving to the audience. Karl Johans Gate is one of the most important places for street artist performing, along with Town Square. Jugglers, musicians and other performers represent an important part of the street scene. Season to perform on the street is from May to October.
On the street, some of the most famous buildings are located, such as the Storting (Norwegian parliament), the National Theater, The Cathedral of Oslo and several university buildings. Most tourist attractions are on this street; such are: the National Gallery of Norway, Akershus Castle, Kon-Tiki Museum or the Oslo Spektrum Music Arena. From the station to the Storting Parliament building, there is a pedestrian zone. Along the Karl Johan there are well-known institutions such as the Cathedral, the National Theater, the university building and the Grand Hotel with the Grand Café.
The closest airport is Gardermoen and the nearest train station is Oslo Central Station.
