Karlin Musical Theatre

The Karlin Musical Theatre is the second largest musical theatre in Prague after the State Opera. Built in 1881, the pseudo-Baroque building originally served as a venue for circus performances. Music Theatre Karlin provides comedies with songs, operettas, musicals, excellent ballets or concerts.

One of the oldest and most beautiful theatres in Prague, founded by the capital city of Prague, the old hall of the Karlin theatre was built in 1881. From 1950, the theatre belonged to the city of Prague and in 1954 it became a property of the state under the name: State Theatre in Karlin.

Before its restoration it was also the theatre with the largest capacity - 1244 seats. Because a good view was not possible from all the seats, after reconstruction there are 'only' 921 seats in the venue. Thanks to an increase in the elevation of the auditorium, the view of the stage from all seats is great. The theater‘s chandelier above the auditorium got its original appearance, as well as the historical curtain. The restored Karlin Theater opened on 12th October 2006. It has been upgraded and made more comfortable for visitors. The theater was damaged by flood in 2002 and since then the operation of Karlin Musical Theatre and Little Karlin (Semafor) was stopped and the performances had to move to the Congress Centre.
The theater is now one of the most beautiful in Prague, thanks to forty restorers.
