The Alaska Statehood Monument, also known as the Eisenhower Alaska Statehood Monument, was completed in 1990 as part of a nationwide effort to observe the 100th anniversary of President Eisenhower’s birth. Overlooking Buttress Park, the Monument, which commemorates President Eisenhower’s signing of the Alaska Statehood Act of 1959, sits at the corner of Second Avenue and E Street, just north of the Cadastral Survey Monument, which honors the original town site survey that lead to the creation of the city of Anchorage. The Alaska Statehood Monument is within easy walking distance of many local attractions, including the Historic Anchorage Hotel, the only hotel in Anchorage on the National Register of Historic Places, the Wendler Building, which is the starting point of the famous Iditarod Trail Race, and the Historic Fourth Street Theater. Also nearby are the William A. Egan Convention Center and the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts.
