If you're hoping to see wildlife in Alaska but would prefer to do so in a safe environment, a great place to go is to The Alaska Zoo, located just a short drive from downtown Anchorage. For over 30 years, the zoo has been a great place to see both animals native to Alaska, as well as exciting species from all over the world.

Some of the more exotic creatures you can expect to see when visiting The Alaska Zoo are one African elephant, a few Amur tigers, some yaks, and Bactrian Camels. The focus, though, is on exciting animals native to Alaska. Expect to see bald eagles, snowy owls, trumpeter swans, as well as reindeer, alpacas, both black bears and brown bears, and a few varieties of seals. There's also an extensive polar bear habitat.

The zoo is known for hosting children's birthday parties and for its special events. In October, it's time for Hibernation Celebration, when visitors to the zoo can celebrate the long winter's nap that the local bears are about to take (the black bears and the brown bears only, as polar bears don't hibernate). There's also a special Halloween celebration, with fun events and costumes galore.
