The Kaufhaus des Westens ("Department Store of the West" in German, often known by the acronym KaDeWe) is a shopping center located on street Tauentzienstraße in Schöneberg, Berlin, Germany. It is the best known shopping area of that country, with over 60,000 m² of floor space and the largest in continental Europe.
It was established in 1905 and is currently owned by the Karstadt chain, part of the corporate group Arcandor AG. The department store of the west (KaDeWe) is a German department store with an upscale range of products and luxury goods, which was founded by Adolf Jandorf.
It is spread over 8 floors: the first three of clothing, jewelry and various items, particularly luxury, the 4th floor of technology and electronics, the 5th of games. Particularly popular is the 6th floor with its huge range of international delicacies, such as to make it the largest food section of a department store over the world. On the 7th floor there is a large restaurant. The so-called "8th floor - underground - is not only parking lot, but also an area for the dogs while shopping.
The nearest airports are Tegel and Schönefeld and the closest train station available in this area is Zoologischer Garten. The most visited landmarks are: Martin-Gropius-Bau, the Brandenburg Gate, Siegessäule, Castle Bellevue, Gedächtniskirche, the Holocaust Memorial and the beautiful German Museum of Technology. Chancellor's Garden is the nearest park to this location and so are two of the most popular areas in Berlin, Potsdamer Platz and Pariser Platz. Subway is available; the nearest station is Wittenbergplatz.
