Located in the historic district of Cairo, the Al-Azhar Park was built by the Historic Cities Support Programme of the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. The park’s plans for creation was said to date back in 1984 when His Highness the Aga Khan gave the money for the creation of a park as his gift to the people of Cairo, Egypt.

The venue chosen for the construction of the Al-Azhar Park was the old Darassa site. It is a thirty hectare site that is located between the eastern edge of the twelfth-century Ayyubid city and the fifteenth-century Mamluk or ‘city of the dead.’

One of the parks many attractions is the Ayyubid Wall. It is a 1.5 kilometer wall that is eight-hundred years old and is one of the world’s greatest archaeological findings. The wall is the proof of works made during the Islamic period. Some other historical findings that are in the park are the fourteenth century Umm Sultan Shaban Mosque, the thirteenth century Kayrbek complex and the Darb Shoughlan School.

Other facilities in the park are the Lakeside Café, The Citadel view Alain le Notre, Citadel View Studio Misr, Ayyubid Café, Royal Palm promenade, the Telescope, Children’s Play Area, The Amphitheater among others. Hotels in the area are the Cairo Marriott Hotel & Casino, Sofitel Cairo El Gezirah, Nubian Hostel, the Nile Hotel, the Grand Hyatt Cairo and others.
