Kazimierz Jewish District

Hotels near Kazimierz Jewish District, Krakow, Poland .

Just off the center of Old Town Krakow, is the trendy Kazimierz Jewish District, whose
bustling streets of restaurants, clubs, antique shops and charming hotels no longer show
signs of the painful 20th century history that this area was witness to. The quarter was
created in 1495 as a separate city on the outskirts of Krakow for Polish Jews, though over
the next several centuries it became a center of the Jewish Diaspora in Europe. Despite
its relative isolation, the Jews of Kazimierz were frequently the target of discrimination
and violence during its long history.

Over the years the city's Jewish population continued to grow and was up to 60,000
before the Second World War. At the beginning of the Nazi occupation of Poland, the
Polish Jews were ordered to evacuate Krakow and those remaining were forced to live in
the Jewish ghetto in the north of the Kazimierz district. In 1943 the Nazis liquidated the
ghetto and the inhabitants were sent to death camps in Poland. Only 2000 Krakovian
Jews survived the Holocaust and today there are only 1000 Jews living in the city.

After suffering from decades of neglect and disuse, it remained a run down and unsafe
part of the city until the late 1990s when money was invested in its turn around. Today
the quarter's streets are safe and the district houses unique restaurants of various cuisines
and prices ranges. Kazimierz in recent years has become is the intellectual and less
touristy than old town Krakow. It is home to the annual Jewish Cultural Festival and
many art and theater events throughout the year. There is also the Old Jewish Cemetery,
Museum of Judaism and several historic synagogues which are open to visitors.

Throughout Kazimierz are small, modern hotels with plenty of charm made to fit any
traveler's budget, but don't expect rates to be cheaper than in Western Europe just
because it in a former Soviet bloc country. While there are deals to be made in Poland,
they are generally not on accommodations.
