One of the most notable landmarks in all of Wichita, Kansas, the Keeper of the Plains is a 44-foot tall sculpture that stands out against the flat landscape. Sitting at the intersection of the Little Arkansas and the Arkansas Rivers, the statue is not just a landmark for the states, but also a sort of memorial for the numerous local tribes of indigenous peoples, with different displays surrounding the statue that describe the tribes who used to inhabit the lands before white settlers started moving in.

Built by a Kiowa-Comanche artist named Blackbear Bosin, the Keeper of the Plains statue is made out of Cor-Ten steel and was initially built for the special occasion of the United States Bicentennial, back in the 1970s. The statue has not been altered in any way since then, except to be placed upon a 30-foot tall rock base, to make it even more prominent and breathtaking.

Travelers are welcome to visit the Keeper of the Plains 365 days a year, and a number of hotels are nearby, including the Hotel at Old Town, the Hyatt Regency Wichita, and the Broadview Hotel.
