The Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi, is the home of United States army airforce personnel following their satisfactory completion of basic training. Army recruits are also trained in the field of meterology, weather observation and forecasting, and air traffic control. It was built during the second World War as a training area, and named after Samuel Reeves Keesler, Jr., the famous aerial gunner and Mississippi native, killed in the first World War. Hurricane Katrina did significant damage on the air force base in 2005. Although much of the equipment was evacuated beforehand, many of the buildings sustained damages, as the base went under water during the storm surge.
