Keflavík International Airport

The Keflavik international Airport, Reykjavik, is the largest of the two airports in Iceland. It handles only international flights, as Reykjavik Airport handles all domestic traffic. The airport building, situated on the site of a former US military base, is modern, and there are two runways. Two airlines fly from here, Icelandair and Iceland Express, but these two fly to four cities in the USA, two in Canada and 20 throughout Europe. There is just one terminal called Liefur Eiriksson Air Terminal, which was built in 1987 to separate the passengers from the military base. There are also two cargo airlines which fly from Keflavik, Bluebird and Icelandair Cargo.

Reykjavik is the capital city of Iceland, and was established in 870AD, however, the city did not become industrialised until the 18th century. It is a modern capital south of the Arctic Circle, so in summer the days last almost 24 hours; whilst in winter there is only four hours' daylight at the shortest. The city's economy is based on commerce and industry, plus tourism. There are two seaports, the Old Harbour, which the fishermen and cruise ships use and the Sundahofn which cargo ships use. There are various museums and parks to see, but one of the main attractions is the Blue Lagoon, a geothermal hot spring.

Hotel Keflavik has four stars and is close to the airport, 45 minutes drive from Reykjavik Centre and 15 minutes drive from the Blue Lagoon (www.hotelkeflavik.is). The Motel Alex has three stars and is two minutes drive from Keflavik, close to the Blue Lagoon. A room here costs from 45 Euros, whilst the Bed and Breakfast Keflavik Airport is situated on the airport site in the former military base, and a room here costs from 37 Euros per night.
