Kek Lok Si Temple

Hotels near Kek Lok Si Temple, Batu Ferringhi, Malaysia .

Kek Lok Si Temple, the largest Buddhist temple in Southeast Asia, is located in Air Itam in Penang or suburb of Georgetown. It is also one of the most popular temples in the province. The temple was constructed in 1890 with a style inspired from the Goddess of Mercy Temple. A chief monk spearheaded the project with the full support of the consular representative in Penang. The activity was approved by the Emperor Guangxu offering 70,000 volumes of tablets as gifts. This served as the Imperial Edition of the Buddhist Sutras.

In 1906, Kapitan Chung Keng Quess became the main benefactor of the Kek Lok Si Temple. The seven storey Pagoda of 10,000 Buddhas was only completed in 1930. The design of the pagoda is a mixture of Thai-inspired middle tier, Burmese crown and octagon shape base. The style reflects the belief in Theravada and Mahayans Buddhism.

It was only in 2002 when the temple was opened to the public including the viewing of the 30.2 meter Kuan Yin bronze statue. This statue is set up along the hillside just above the pagoda. Tourists and visitors climb the stairway to enter the temple. They pass through a “Liberation Pond” where they can free a turtle to earn their own spiritual freedom.
