Albacete is situated 258km southeast of Madrid and is the capital of the province of Albacete in the community of Castilla-La Mancha.

As one of the largest cities in the region of Castilla-La Mancha, the picturesque and historic city of Albacete comprises of the old upper town as well as the new town or what is also called the lower town, which was erected when the city became a provincial capital in 1833.

Surrounded by a fertile plain, Albacete is renown for its cutlery and Saffron production, whereby a large quantity of saffron is produced in Spain.

However even though Albacete is not considered a tourist destination, sights that should be explored include the Cathedral of Albacete and the Albacete Provincial Museum. Dedicated to Benjamin Palencia who was a renowned self taught Spanish artist, the Albacete Provincial Museum is a museum that is dedicated to three different sections; Archeology, Fine arts and Ethnology.

Since 1927, the museum has existed and in 1978 it settled in its current building in Abelardo Sanchez Park. Visitors can expect to see exhibits on the development of regional civilization and art that are divided into subsections for fine arts, archeology as well as ethnology.

Inside the museum, visitors can witness the Benjamin Palencia fine arts section which focuses on 20th century works, including many pieces that have been done by local contemporary artists.

Visitors can take some time out at the museum between Tuesday - Saturday during 9am - 14:00 and 4:30 - 19:00. On Sundays and public holidays the museum is open from 9am - 14:00.

General admission is €1.20 with a reduced price of €0.59 for youth card holders, students with IDs and groups with a minimum of 15 people. Free admission will apply to over 65s, retirees and under 18s with IDs. Free admission is also applicable on Saturdays and Sundays.
