Basketball is a pretty significant pastime in Kansas City, and with the local college teams beating NCAA records left and right, it's no wonder that the biggest arena in college-ball tournaments is right smack dab in the center of the city.

But Kemper Arena is about more than just basketball. The arena hosts a number of different sporting events, including professional basketball games, a number of different hockey games, occasional wrestling matches and livestock shows, and even concerts from time to time.

Kemper Arena was built in the early 1970s after a generous donation from one of the city's most powerful families, The Kempers, who made a generous living operating business out of Kansas City. Kemper Arena is the sight of an infamous roof collapse in 1979, which thankfully injured no one, but raised doubts about some of the calculations during construction. Everything was re-evaluated and brought up-to-par shortly thereafter and there have been no further accidents since.

Some of the notable NCAA tournaments that have taken place at Kemper Arena include the Men's and Women's Final Four, The Big Eight Basketball Tournament for men, The Big 12 Basketball Tournament for Men, and the Regional Finals. A variety of professional teams have played games at Kemper Arena, including Kansas City teams from arena football, international hockey, and indoor soccer.

Non-sporting events at Kemper Arena include The American Royal Livestock show, and a number of concerts by famous musicians, including The Red Hot Chili Peppers, AC/DC, The Rolling Stones, Bob Dylan, Tina Turner, and Garth Brooks.
