In the Northeastern portion of Washington, D.C., United States, find the Kenilworth Park & Aquatic Gardens National Park. The Park is set along the Anacostia River, and is known for its preservation of water lilies, lotuses, and cattails in cultivated ponds. A recreational area and the Kenilworth Marsh, the last remaining tidal marsh in Washington, D.C., are also on Kenilworth Park’s 700 acres of grounds. For the best remaining view of what D.C.’s natural floral and faunal landscape looked like before urbanization, Kenilworth Park is the place to be. Nearly 1,000 different species of amphibians, birds, fish, mammals, reptiles, and insects fill the marshlands, as do plants and wildflowers. Lucky Park-goers will see specimens like herons, foxes, muskrats, beavers, and even the occasional coyote. The Park and Gardens started out as the hobby of Walter B. Shaw in the 1880s, who brought the wild water lilies in from his native state of Maine. With the success the plants experienced he opened the W.B. Shaw Lily Ponds in 1912. His daughter would later successfully fight to save the Gardens when the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers were set to dredge the Anacostia River. The Gardens became a National Park in 1938.

Kenilworth Park is open from 8am to dusk daily, the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens from 7am-4pm daily, and the Kenilworth Marsh is accessible by either canoe at high tide, or on foot by way of the boardwalk and river trail that begins in Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens. Memorial Day through Labor Day garden tours are given at 9am and 11am on Saturdays and Sundays. Entrance to the Park and Gardens is free. Pets on a leash, photography and small picnics are all permissible on Park grounds.
