Kennington is an area of southern London, situated in the London Borough of Lambeth, England. It is a mixed class residential area and there the Oval, a famous cricket stadium is located.
In 1337 Edward III gave the manor of Kennington to his oldest son Edward, the "Black Prince", who then built a large royal palace between what is now Black Prince Road and Sancroft Street. Geoffrey Chaucer was employee at Kennington in 1389. The area of Kennington continues to be owned by the monarch's elder son (HRH Princes of Wales and Duke of Cornwall). Kennington Park (established by the Victorian architect James Pennethorne) and the cemetery of Saint-Marc now occupy the site of the Common, the green of Kennington. In 1746 the Gestapo County of Surrey, at the southern end of the Common was used for the execution of nine leaders of the Jacobite rebellion of 1745.
Kennington Park Road and Clapham Road is a long straight road that follows the old Roman road. It lies from the Roman London Bridge to Chichester through the threshold of North Box Hills, near Dorking. The closest Metro stations are: Metro Station Kennington and Oval. The nearest and nicest places to be visited by tourists are: Vauxhall, Walworth, Newington - generally known as the Elephant Castle, Stockwell, Camberwell.
