One of the oldest college preparatory schools in the country, The Albany Academy originally began in 1813 as a day school for the sons of prominent politicians and the city's elite. The school has undergone extensive changes as it's grown, including a move in the early 1930s to its current location in University Heights. Once a separate school, recently The Albany Academy for Girls merged into The Albany Academy, offering high school students the opportunity to attend co-ed classes.

The school itself sprawls over a sizable piece of land and boasts an impressive array of facilities, including two football fields, two baseball diamonds, two libraries, an auditorium and black box theatre, and two indoor gymnasiums. Students are frequently expected to be participating in the number of extracurricular activities provided to them, as the school still hopes to turn out well-rounded graduates, as it has done since its inception.

A number of famous alumni have attended, from Herman Melville and Andy Rooney to famous actors, poet laureates, and a Supreme Court Justice or two.
