The Kern County Museum located in Bakersfield, California is home to 50 historic structures and exhibits depicting the history of the county and the West.

The museum is rooted in the most humble beginnings, sparked by a 1929 letter to a local paper calling for Kern County citizens to donate historical materials to the County Chamber of Commerce. The Kern County Museum was finally founded in 1941 but did not begin to work fully until 1945. The museum has grown over the years and is now a prime tourist attraction, educational facility and community center. The Main Museum is housed in the Chamber of Commerce building and houses the exhibits, library and collection storage. Also present in an outdoor complex are various historic structures and a gift shop. Today, the museum serves more than 94,000 people each year and features 56 historic exhibits including Black Gold: The Oil Experience. It also hosts temporary exhibitions and events.

Accredited by the American Association of Museums, the museum is open Monday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission tickets (at $10 and under as of September 2009) are sold until 3:00 p.m. daily.
