Originally founded in 1960, The Albany Berkshire Ballet started as an extension of The Cantarella School of Dance in Pittsfield, Massachusetts and grew from a performance destination for promising young ballet students into a full-time professional ballet company. Productions from The
Albany Berkshire Ballet now perform all over New England, as well as in other northeastern cities and even up in Canada.

The Albany Berkshire Ballet moved to Albany proper in the 1980s and brought with it a company known for its myriad of productions staged, including Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" and "A Midsummer Night's Dream," the classic Christmas favorite "The Nutcracker," and an array of other full-length ballets. A number of famous choreographers have worked with the company, included Antony Tudor, Igor Youskevitch, and Michel Fokine and members of the emerging avant garde in choreography such as Francis Patrelle, Ginger Thatcher, and Daryl Gray.

The Albany Berkshire Ballet's "Nutcracker" performances often sell out well in advance, so visitors hoping to see "The Nutcracker" should plan ahead. In addition to regular ballet season, The Albany Berkshire Ballet also has a summer dance program with performances as well as classes for aspiring ballerinas.
