Kestner Museum opened way back in 1889 when the private collections of diplomat-lawyer August Kestner and senator Friedrich Culeman were combined and donated to the city of Hannover in Germany. Kestner was a diplomat stationed in Rome and was able to collect many items from Egypt, Greece and Italy. His nephew who inherited the items gave them to the city. On the other hand, senator Culeman was fond of collecting antiques and artworks.

Today, the collections are divided into four: coins and medals, Egyptian Art, Antiquity Art and Arts and crafts. Many of the timeless and priceless items date back during the medieval times. Modern items were gradually added to the museum's collection. The whole exhibit spans 600 years of culture and history.

The Kestner Museum has a cafeteria serving meals and drinks. It is also accessible for those with disability. The museum is open daily except Monday from 11am to 6pm. During Wednesdays, it extends up to 8pm. During holidays like Christmas, New Year, Ascension Day and Good Friday, the museum closes. Admission is 5€ and it is free during Fridays.
