Key West Cemetery

Hotels near Key West Cemetery, Key West, United States .

Serving as a sort of open air historical museum for visitors from out of town, the Key West Cemetery is a fascinating destination that will reveal a lot about the spirit and the eccentricity of many of the pioneers and later residents of this island community. The cemetery dates all the way back to 1847 and was established near one of the island's hills, as in 1846 a hurricane had exhumed various corpses from a lower lying cemetery on the island.

Currently, all of the cemetery's underground spaces are taken and so all new burials take place in whitewashed above ground vaults, something which gives the cemetery a distinct look. There are many different sectors within the Key West Cemetery, honoring the diverse heritage of the local community: there's a section for the Jewish community, a section dedicated to the martyrs of the various Cuban freedom struggles, a section dedicated to slaves that died on their journey from Africa across the Atlantic, and the list continues.

The main entrance gates to the cemetery are found at the intersection of Angela and Margaret Streets; visitors are allowed in to the grounds on a regular basis, though the gates do close at dusk. For more information regarding this cemetery, visit the following website: http://www.keywest.com/cemetery.html.

Finding accommodations in this part of Key West is a breeze, and among the closest and most convenient options visitors will find the Palms Hotel, the Authors Guest House, and the El Rancho Motel.
