Founded in 1998 in response to the poor selection of films available on the island, the Key West Film Society operates South Florida’s only non profit independent film theater. The Film Society began with weekly film screenings in rented space, soon moving to bi-weekly shows, and in 2004, after a two-year fundraising drive, opened the Tropic Cinema. Today, after a 2007 renovation, the Tropic Cinema is a triplex theater, operating full time, with a large lobby that doubles as a cultural center, as well as the home of the Key West Film Society.

The Tropic Cinema now features a variety of films, from first run, major studio Hollywood productions to independent and alternative cinema. The 8,000 square foot facility itself boasts three screens, with stadium seating, featuring high definition digital audio and surround sound, as well as 35mm film. In addition to cinema, the Key West Film Society hosts a number of special events monthly, including live music, high definition opera concerts, and community meetings.

Located at 416 Eaton Street in Key West, the Key West Film Society is within easy walking distance of attractions like the Audubon House and Tropical Gardens, Old Post Office and Customhouse, and the Key West Aquarium. Ticket prices vary per showing, with discounts available to Key West Film Society members.
