The Khamis Mosque is arguably the first mosque in Bahrain. The mosque is said to be built during the period of the Umayyad caliph Umar II. The Khamir Mosque is one of the most noticeable landmarks in the city. When driving along the Shaikh Salman Road in Khamis, one could easily see the twin minarets of the Khamis Mosque.

This ancient Islamic monument is considered as one of the oldest relics of Islam in the Middle East. Its foundation is believed to have been set up and built in as early as 692 AD. An inscription however, suggests a date of foundation that is around the 11th century. The Khamis Mosque has been rebuilt twice after that in the 14th and 15th century. It was in the second rebuilt that the twin minarets were constructed.

The mosque has been partially restored just recently. It is located in Khamis which is between Isa town and Salmniya. Khamis is mostly a residential area with numerous business establishments and shops.
