One of Albany's most extensive resources,The Albany Heritage Area Visitor's Center provides those interested in getting to know the area and its history a little better ample opportunities to do so. The center consists of a gift shop and planetarium, as well as a museum and area for visitors to get personal assistance with their questions. In short, it's much more than your run-of-the-mill collection of brochures with a public bathroom.

The on-site museum offers visitors a nice overview of the history of Albany, including the chance to see some local artifacts. There's also an extensive guide to the neighborhoods, which is greatly helpful for newcomers looking to acclimate themselves. For those amateur astronomers, the planetarium's various lectures and special shows are a great draw, but the real highlight is the second Saturday of every month, when the star-sighting program happens.

The Albany Heritage Area Visitor's Center is located in the heart of downtown, and shares a building with The Albany County Convention and Visitors Bureau.

The building is open on weekdays from nine in the morning until four in the afternoon, on Saturday from ten in the morning until three in the afternoon, and on Sunday from eleven in the morning until three in the afternoon. For those visitors with cars, there's a great deal of metered parking available in the building's parking lot. A number of the downtown hotels are a short walk away, including The Hampton Inn & Suites, The Holiday Inn Express - Downtown Albany, and The Crowne Plaza Hotel Albany - City Center.
