The Kiek in de Kok of Tallinn, Estonia is a six-level, 38-meter high fortified tower which is named from a time when the city was part of the Hanseatic League of northern European trading countries. This "Peep in the Kitchen", the literal translation from Low German, was named so because of the fact that those sent to guard the tower were able to see what was cooking in the kitchen of the nearby houses down below.

Aside from the late 15th century tower's unintended use for observing the goings on of neighboring homes, the structure was the most heavily armed part of the city's outer fortifications that were built to protect the inhabitants of this important port city. The scars of the sieges against the tower and surrounding town remain as cannonballs lodged within the 4 meter thick walls that date as far back as 1577.

Over the course of its 500 year history, the tower has been remodeled and added on to numerous times. As additional levels and a roof were added above, the bottom two floors were buried underground in a earthen mound. The museum now housed in the tower contains multiple levels of artifacts and armaments from Estonian history, though the tower has been used over the centuries for apartments, storage, archives and even training quarters for Estonian athletes at the turn of the 20th century.
