Dating from 1911, the Kiel Town Hall, or Rathaus, sits on a square bordering the
one of the longest shopping streets in Germany and the city's Opera house. This
structure was originally built to replace the Alte Rathaus, or old Town Hall, due to the
increase in Kiel's population that was a result of the town's growing importance as a
German naval base.
Adjacent to the Town Hall is the 107 meter tower that can be climbed by foot or
by use of the paternoster, an small, open elevator that runs on a loop in which passengers
must jump off at their desired floor. The tower of Venetian design holds a large
glockenspiel which plays song as the clock strikes an hour.
Due to the city of Kiel's strategic location as a center of the Reich's maritime
activity, nearly 80% of the city was destroyed by Allied bombings during the Second
World War. The Town Hall was among the buildings hit by American bombs, and all
that remained were the remnants of the walls and arches.
Today the Kiel Town Hall is an important stop for tourists in the center of the
rebuilt old town. In and around the Rathausplatz one can find affordable and comfortable
accommodations in this capital of Schleswig-Holstein. As a city on the busiest artificial
waterway in the world, Kiel Canal, and due to its prime location near the Baltic Sea,
