One of the oldest museums in the United States, The Albany Institute of History & Art is a must-see museum for history and art buffs alike. Located in the city's busy downtown, within walking distance of State House the Morgan, Wingate by Wyndham, and The Hilton Garden Inn, The Albany Institute of History & Arts is easy to reach.

Once there, visitors will be amazed with the extensive permanent collection, which includes hundreds of thousands of ceramics, furniture items, paintings, drawings, and sculptures. Those with a keen interest in photography will be wowed by the collection of old photographs, which numbers close to 90,000.

The building that houses all of this art consists of the original main building, a gift shop, and a contemporary glass entrance. The museum's permanent installations include Sense of Place: 18th and 19th Century Paintings and Sculpture, 19th Century American Sculpture, and The Landscape That Defined America: The Hudson River School. The Hudson River School exhibit is particularly extensive, with a great number of paintings from those who worked close to the museum itself.

Not just a museum dedicated to art, The Albany Institute of Art & History also has a permanent exhibit on ancient Egypt that includes a couple of mummies and a look at colonial Albany and the region's original inhabitants.
