Nestled in the southwest corner of Killala Bay lies Kilcummin Strand, Ireland the site of
a French and Irish invasion during the Irish Rebellion of 1798 that sent the British
occupying forces running. This quiet beach located in County Mayo, whose nearest city
is Ballina, is safe for swimming and surfing and, aside from its history, is known for its
low pollution, copious sea life and excellent visibility and is thus popular with scuba
divers. Visitors are encouraged to utilize one of the deep sea fishing charters in the area
and try their hand at reeling in the Mackerel, Pollack, Salmon, sea trout, blue shark and
flat fish that swim the waters of the bay and nearby Atlantic.

Nearby Lacken Beach has in the past decade revived its Lacken Strand Races which has
become one of the most popular racing events in Ireland, drawing horses and trainers
from some of the top racing stables in the country. County Mayo is also home to a
thriving Gaelic Football team which has made it to the All-Ireland finals as recently as
2006.

This beachhead named for Saint Cummin is home to mainly small farms, a spattering of
vacation homes and, of course, the typical Irish pub. In this sparsely populated county of
126,000, there are many opportunities for visitors to stay at quaint, small town bed and
breakfasts and pensions or to rent their own beach property for the week or longer. Prices
range from 50 Euros per night for a small hotel, to 300 Euros for the week for a private
vacation home.
