Kilkea Castle, the oldest inhabited castle in all of Ireland, began its reign as a hotel after
700 years of life with the same family and has been opened to guests since its sale in
1960. Built in 1180 by Sir Walter de Riddlesford, this castle now boasts facilities that
include a challenging golf course, an indoor swimming pool, jacuzzi, fitness center,
saunas, and tennis courts on the extensive grounds.

The grounds of this 12th century Norman castle are located only 5 km northwest of
Castledermot in landlocked County Kildare, a county of nearly 200,000 that is home to
the largest base of the Irish Army. This region is best known for its horse racing and
famous stud farms and is home to the Punchestown racecourse.

While the castle was originally built as a motte-and-bailey fortification, an common
inexpensive castle structure consisting of an earthen mound and a protective fence, in its
long life it has been through numerous additions and is now home to 35 guest rooms, a
restaurant and a conference center. Among its more famous inhabitants thought to haunt
the castle was a man by the name of Garrett Ogg, or the Wizard Earl, a man believed to
have practiced magic in the castle during the 16th century.

The hotel's corporate and private customers alike are invited to make use of the
conference center with space for up to 300 people that is set up for audio-visual use and
can be utilized for anything from exhibitions and large evening banquets to small
company lunches. The castle is frequently the location for both indoor and outdoor
weddings and the rooms can house up to 200 guests for any event. Kilkea Castle can also
provide catering for events of all sizes.
