The Kimball Building stands as home to the final remaining private business on the city block now known as Anchorage Town Square. In 1915, when Anchorage was little more than a tent city of workers, most of whom were dedicated to the construction of the Alaska Railroad, traders Irving and Delta Kimball placed a bid of $500 on a piece of property at the corner of 5th Avenue and E Street. They won the bid, and soon after constructed the two-story Kimball’s Dry Goods store. At the time, this was one of very few multi-story buildings in Anchorage, and served as a general store to early residents of the city. The Kimball Building was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986, and Kimball’s Dry Goods Store remained in business until 2002. Today, the Kimball Building serves as a great example of early commercial architecture in Anchorage, and is home to The Kobuk Coffee Shop.

The Kimball Building is located on Town Square Park, which hosts the city’s Summer Solstice and Christmas Tree Lighting Celebrations, and is within a short walk of many other local attractions, such as the Alaska State Trooper Museum, the Alaska Center for the Performing Arts, and Historic Anchorage City Hall.
