The King's Theatre
The King's Theatre was errected in 1905 by William Stewart Cruikshankto the designs of JD Swanston and James Davidson, architects, and opened in 1906 with a performance of Cinderella. It stands on a prominent site on Leven Street in Edinburgh and is one of Scotland's historic and most important theatres.
The theatre's interior and exterior were designed individually. James Davidson designed the construction itself. The building's facade is distinctly symmetrical, and looks more like the building of an insurance company than a theatre.
The interior of the King's Theatre was designed by J.D. Swanston, a Kirkcaldy architect. The auditorium originally had a capacity of 2,500, with tip up seats in the stalls and circles, and upholstered benches with metal arm rests in the top Balcony. After a number of modifications the auditorium now seats 1,350, just over half the original capacity. The boxes are set over 3 levels, and are tiered elegantly on top of each other. The sightlines in the hall were poor as the architects were not as experienced as others in the same field. These were however, small criticisms as the theatre's qualities surpassed the faults.
The King's Edinburgh is now for sure one of the more luxurious theatres in Scotland. The theatre is housing the Edinburgh's mainstream annual pantomime, which is produced by Qdos Entertainment. The theatre is now managed by the Festival City Theatres trust which also controls the Festival Theatre. The theatre is also an main venue over the Festival period.
In 2003 the Theatre's exterior was refurbished and it is hoped that further refurbishment of the interior is going to commence soon.
