Kingsley Plantation

Hotels near Kingsley Plantation, Jacksonville (Florida), United States .

Like it or not, many people came to Florida initially to seek their fortunes by establishing plantations, and most of those plantations relied on the labor of slaves for daily operations. One of the largest plantations in Florida is located on Fort George Island, part of the state's Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve, named after the indigenous people who originally inhabited the area, and whose shell mounds still stand and were a major source of constructional materials for the original plantation.

Today, visitors interested in history, or anyone who finds themselves visiting the nature preserve with some extra time might find a trip to the Kingsley Plantation educational and thought-provoking. A site not just of the plantation, but also of many homes for free slaves after The Civil War, the land currently houses recreations of what the original slave dwellings would have looked like, as well as the remains of the most regal part of the Kingsley's original plantation house.

Kinglsey and his family had quite the colorful history, as he was well known around the area as running quite the scandalous polygamous and multi-racial household. Since Florida had a great deal of marriages between plantation owners and slaves, and a separate class of people of color existed while the state was under Spanish rule, allowing non-whites not just the opportunity to own property, but to actually own their own slaves.

More information on the state of affairs is available throughout the preserved buildings that are a part of present-day Kingsley Plantation. Visitors can explore Kingsley Plantation for free, seven days a week, from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon. The Plantation is only closed on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. In addition to the original structures, there are also a bookstore and a visitor center.

Kingsley Plantation is only a short drive from a few area hotels, including The Comfort Inn Mayport, The Best Western Inn and Suites Hotel in Atlantic Beach, and The Regency Inn.
