The town of Kiruna is located in the northernmost part of the city Sweden. The area around Kiruna is sparsely populated and is located amongst mountains, rivers and vast expanses of green meadows. This makes the train ride to the Kiruna train station a very enchanting one. The landscape is beautiful and one will remember the station and the town for long. The Kiruna train station connects it to Narvik. The trains and railways were originally built to serve the coal mining that was happening in these areas on a large scale.. Most of the trains that ply between Lulea and Narvik will start or end at Kiruna. Therefore, the Kiruna railway station is an important link and junction. This is the place that tourists alight especially if they are going for a day trip up into the mountains.
From the Kiruna Railwway station the Kiruna Airport is about 8 km by road. The Kiruna station is the kind that was built in the 1800s. In the year 1884 a concession was granted to allow the railway to be built between Lulea and Narnik and passing through Kiruna. The first train was flagged off in 1888. Due to the mininig activity the town was able to prosper. However, during the depression the production dropped but the setting up of the railway brought plenty of tourists to this spot. The moment you are in this region you will wonder at the majestic mountains and rivers that flow here.
