Kizilay is a the district of Ankara that is in fact its heart. Residents of Ankara say it is impossible to get lost because every road passes through Kizilay. Kizilay Meydani, located at the crossroads of Ataturk Bulvari, Gokalp Caddesi and Gazi Mustafa Kemal Bulvari, is lined with modern shops and offices. Its real name is Independence Square. The unofficial name is taken from the red cross hospital, which stood on the northwest corner. There are plenty of cafes and affordable places to eat and drink; it is a favourite meeting point. Surprisingly, alcohol is served in public, which is quite unusual for the region. In the southern corner of the square, Guvern Park is host to a memorial symbolizing the three national virtues: patriotism, creativity and the desire for peace. Ankara’s first skyscraper is a 16-floor building hosting Gima and Kizilay Post Office. You can enjoy a cup of tea or coffee on top of the building and watch the stream of Kizilay. Yuksel Caddesi is a pedestrian zone, behind Gima, a favourite place among students due to its stands offering second-hand books, paints, accessories and gifts. Sakarya is an entertainment area again closed to vehicle traffic. Here you will find delicatessen, florists, fish sellers, beer houses. Springtime is the best time to visit it due to the wonderful show offered by colors and flavors. The most famous restaurant is Goksu, offering delicious dishes, however, you may need a reservation, otherwise you won’t find an empty table. Jewelers and a book paradise is what you encounter when you stroll down the Ataturk Bulvari. Don’t leave Kizilay before tasting Mastic Turkish delight or marzipan. The American Bazaar is where residents of Ankara used to buy their first blue jeans or Converse shoes.
