One of the things Cape Town, or South Africa in particular, is known for is its fine wines. Most of these wines are created or produced from wine estates such as the famed Groot Constantia. Groot Constantia is actually the main wine estate, but upon the death of the former governor of the Cape, Simon van der Stel, the estate was divided into three parts.

It was in 1778 when a portion of the estate that surrounded van der Stel’s house was sold to the Cloete family. This family planted huge vineyards and made moves to extend and improve the mansion. It was through his death and the subsequent dividing of his property that Klein Constantia was born, after Cloete’s son Johan Gerhard Cloete gave it its name.

Some of the wines that are notably from Klein Constantia include Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling. The wine estate also began producing Constantia dessert wine in 1986, which has not been done since the 1880s.
