To the south of Hyde Park, London’s largest public park, between Kensigton, Belgravia and Mayfair, you will find Knightbridge, a small area which is one of the most exclusive and expensive districts in London. The district lies to the west of Central London. Its name comes from a fight between two knights that happened on a bridge across Westbourne, which is now an underground river. Famous for its inns and taverns in the past, today Knightsbridge is best known for its shopping. Here is where you will find Harrods, Harvey Nichols and Beauchamp Palace. The stores are luxurious so walking the area is a real treat. Harrods is an icon of retailing consisting of seven levels offering luxury goods. The magnificent Food Halls will astonish you with the selection of products found in the Charcuterie, Fromagerie & Traiteur, Chocolates, Confectionary, together with the meat, fish and poultry areas. You will not regret having a snack or a meal at Harrods. The statues of Dodi Fayed and Princess Diana will greet you on the ground level near the Basil Street entrance. Most of you will find a way to leave Harrods with one of the green shopping bags containing some of the goodies. Belgrave Square, the setting for My Fair Lady, and the streets here have properties with some of the highest prices in the world. Apsley House, which became known as No. 1, London, is still occupied by the heir of Duke of Wellington, even though just the modest suite on the top floor. The rest of the house well deserves a visit for its fine art collection containing pieces offered by kings following the Battle of Waterloo. Wellington Arch became a favourite spot following the completion of a restoration project revealing its interior to the public. Two observation platforms offer a magnificent view of Buckingham Palace Gardens, Green Park and Hyde Park. Ornate Baroque flourishes in Brompton Oratory of St. Philip Neri, London’s second largest Catholic Church with a nave wider than St. Paul’s. You will be delighted to listen to a Solemn Mass, sung in Latin should you visit it on a special occasion. The Royal Albert Hall is a large music and sport events venue. Some of the most renowned restaurant in London are in Knightsbridge, together with many hair and beauty salons, antiquities dealers, chic bars and clubs.
