Knockabbey Castle and Gardens

The Knockabbey Castle and Gardens are located in Louth Village, near Tallanstown, Ireland. They are approximately 8 kilometers south-west of the town of Dundalk.

Knockabbey Castle was initially known as Thomastown Castle. The oldest part of the building dates back to 1399, a Georgian and then a Gothic wing being added later. The numerous additions and changes evident in the castle and gardens reflect different stories about the castle’s owners.

Near to the entrance area is the Tower House Interpretative Centre, where visitors can find a great exhibition about the colorful history of the castle itself and the people who lived here.

The Tulip Tree was probably planted here in the late 17th century when it was first introduced to Europe from North America. This type of tree was highly fashionable at that time. This rare tree is easily recognized by the t-shirt shape of its leaves and the thousands of tulip shaped flowers which bloom is summer. Near the Tulip Tree are some ancient yew trees, which possibly have more than four hundred years in age.

The Victorian Flower Garden was established around 1900 by Sybil O’Reilly as a formal ornamental garden with a glasshouse, a rockery and a shrubbery. The original rockery was built beside the glasshouse from stone brought from Donegal. Unfortunately the original glasshouse did not survive, but the current one is a faithful reconstruction.

The castle and the gardens can be visited in May and September on Saturday and Sunday, and in June, July and August from Tuesday until Sunday, from 10:30 AM to 5:30 PM. The admission fee for one adult is of 10 Euros and a family ticket, for two adults and two children, is 28 Euros.

Travelers can find many beautiful accommodations in the area, among which the Bell Hill Barns is one of the best. The prices start at about 70 Euros per night.
