When the City of Toronto, Ontario, Canada was still known as the Town of York, the area’s first Presbyterian congregation formed. It was the year 1820, and a church was built known as the First Presbyterian Congregation of York, Upper Canada. In 1847 the old York Church burnt in a fire, and a new, much larger, church was built to replace it. After a second fire that destroyed the Church’s steeple in 1895 it was eventually decided to moved the Church to Spadina Avenue, its present home nearby the University of Toronto. Today the Church building is celebrated for its Gothic Revival and Romanesque Revival architecture, and its community outreach programs like the Knox Summer Fellowship, the “Out of the Cold” program for youth living on the streets, and offering ESL English classes. The Knox Presbyterian Church is open for regular services on Sundays and at various times throughout the week. Pay-for-use parking is available in the area, and the Church is accessible by TCC public transit on the Bloor-Danforth Subway line or the Wellesley bus.
