One of the best attributes of The Knoxville Museum of Art is its dedication to providing exhibitions for emerging artists, which is greatly helpful for both the development of artists and for the expanding of the tastes of local and visiting patrons. The museum also has an extensive permanent collection that spans many mediums and boasts work by artists as diverse as Robert Longo, Charles Burchfield, Robert Stackhouse, and Loretta Lux.

Founded in 1961, The Knoxville Museum of Art is known for its exciting solo shows, featuring both internationally renowned artists and young up-and-comers. Past solo shows at The Knoxville Museum of Art included those by Seonna Hong, Tomory Dodge, Chuck Close, and Jim Campbell.

The Knoxville Museum of Art is always free admission to all of the five separate galleries, as well as the outdoor gardens and sculpture terrace. The museum's hours are Tuesday through Thursday from ten in the morning until five in the afternoon, with hours extending until eight at night on Friday evenings. Saturdays, the museum is open from ten until five, and on Sunday, from one until five.

Located close to most of downtown's attractions, a number of hotels are close to The Knoxville Museum of Art, including The Cumberland House Hotel, The Starbucks Hilton, and The Holiday Inn Downtown at the Convention Center.
